How the work is approached
Power may need to be interrupted while circuits are tested. You receive the report and a practical explanation of any C1, C2, C3 or FI observations and the next sensible step.
Recommendations are based on the existing installation and the result you need. If further defects or extra work become apparent, these are explained before the agreed scope changes.
What the inspection covers
An EICR assesses the condition of fixed wiring, consumer units, sockets and other parts of the electrical installation within the agreed scope. It is different from an installation certificate for new work, and does not replace appliance testing. Access to the consumer unit and selected accessories is needed; power will be interrupted for parts of the testing.
Understanding an unsatisfactory report
The report explains observations using condition codes. C1 means danger is present, C2 means potentially dangerous, FI requires further investigation without delay and C3 identifies an improvement recommendation. C1, C2 or FI observations make the outcome unsatisfactory. A C3 on its own does not. Remedial work should address the findings rather than automatically replacing everything that is older.
